Long before Pheobe Philo was painting an aesthetic of perfection for strong, fashion forward woman of a wide range of ages, the Queen of femme and wrap dress fame, was inventing the very idea of strong, fashion forward women. Now 63, Diane von Furstenberg, who prefers her Belgian last name to be umlaut-less and is quite literally a princess (through marriage), is continuing to wield dominance when it comes to dressing the women on-the-go who is glamorous, sexy, and always put together no matter how many red eye flights she’s endured in her globetrotting escapades.
Furstenberg’s collection starting points go anywhere from Bond Girl to Rock Goddess to Groupie, with the ever-present theme of Nomad mixed in. She quite literally has something for everyone: while my grandma may be into the femininely oversized hound’s-tooth suits, my mother would probably really dig the flower chiffon wraps, and me…well I can’t stop staring at the all-leather fitted suit with the structured, waist-length, three quarter sleeve jacket and cropped pants from her Fall 2010 RTW collection.
There’s no denying Furstenberg’s knack for packable clothing, so many of her pieces are chiffon or jersey knit and this particular blouse, at one hundred percent silk, holds up flawlessly to my fidget-y tendency to wrinkle everything I'm wearing. I also must admit that at first glance, this blouse did not strike me as, well, me. I bought it because of the label, which is something I strive never to do...but at five dollars, I felt in the spirit of fashion archeology, that the best place for this piece was in my closet. It did however, happen to be love at first wear. Buttery smooth, cool, comfortable, with the potential for conservativeness, if ever I needed it, but simultaneously oh-so-sexy when styled just the right way. I will now eternally be a DVF fan.
