I've always idolized groupies, not in a way like I wanna start doing heroine and play musical sexual partners among band members, but in a way like I wanna have the power and the closeness to affect change in something like the Rolling Stones Forty Licks, a la Anita Pallenberg. Furs, jewelry, traveling and parties...all sounds like fun to me. Fun aside, Penny Lane's re-versioning of the term "groupie" to be "band-aids" pretty much solidified my 13 year old self's aspirations to be a part of the boy's club without being a slut. As she famously said, "We are not Groupies. Groupies sleep with rockstars because they want to be near someone famous. We are here because of the music, we inspire the music. We are Band Aids."
Now, the scene is different, and as much as Krystal Simpson wants it to be the decades of free love and fringe up the wazoo, it's more like the decade of dancing to glitchy music in 5" black wedged booties. I feel like I'm surrounded by aspiring DJ's more than aspiring rock stars. So what's a "groupie" to do? Probably get a job and only rock out on weekends. It's a shame it can't be a sustainable lifestyle anymore...or can it?
